I think of red, white, and blue flags. Not to mention “The Star Spangle Banner” and “I’m a Yankee Doodle Dandy.” I’m grateful for the freedom in the USA. Many of us take religious freedom for granted. A young man from Afghanistan told me yesterday that since he’s become a Christian he can never go home for fear of imprisonment or loss of life.
Independence Day is a BIG DEAL, and yet thoughts of food enter my brain. Burgers on the grill, baked beans, apple pie, and strawberry shortcake. Why do I always think of food?
Other things that come to mind? My husband’s over-the-top big-bang fireworks display. It’s amazing our island hasn’t caught fire. Setting off fireworks seems to be a week-long affair up at the beach. I like the colorful displays, but the blasting sounds of M-80s from the center of the island rattle me to the bones.
Since my thoughts are on food, I’ve decided to give away cooking related items. Enter my Giveaway to win these two Amish-made festive potholders and a kitchen towel and dish cloth from Lancaster County that make me want to smile as summer gets into full swing. Plus, one of my signed books: either Starting from Scratch, A Letter from Lancaster County; or one of 3 books from The Legacy of Lancaster County Trilogy—Leaving Lancaster, its sequel, Pennsylvania Patchwork, or Forever Amish; or A Portrait of Marguerite.
An Amish Christmas Kitchen is not in print yet so I can’t include it. Yum, doesn’t that title make you hungry?
