I can’t think of anything more American than July 4th, following on the heels of Canada Day, July 1. I have the feeling many of us forget what Independence Day is all about.

Our flag on a breezy day. Long may it wave!

I think of red, white, and blue flags. Not to mention “The Star Spangle Banner” and “I’m a Yankee Doodle Dandy.” I’m grateful for the freedom in the USA. Many of us take religious freedom for granted. A young man from Afghanistan told me yesterday that since he’s become a Christian he can never go home for fear of imprisonment or loss of life.

I love to get napkins, etc., to match the celebration!

Independence Day is a BIG DEAL, and yet thoughts of food enter my brain. Burgers on the grill, baked beans, apple pie, and strawberry shortcake. Why do I always think of food?

I enjoy the light show but not the noise of fireworks.

Other things that come to mind? My husband’s over-the-top big-bang fireworks display. It’s amazing our island hasn’t caught fire. Setting off fireworks seems to be a week-long affair up at the beach. I like the colorful displays, but the blasting sounds of M-80s from the center of the island rattle me to the bones.
